New "old" car and officially enrolled

Brandon's big news - he bought a car! We picked it up this morning. It is a 95 Toyota Corolla. It's got a lot of miles on it, but is in good mechanical condition. He won't be driving much as a freshman anyway, so we thought this was a good car for him. It gets great gas mileage!

AND - he is now officially enrolled at K-State! We went up yesterday for freshman orientation and enrollment. It was a LONG day! We had to be there by 8:15, so we left home around 5:45 am. There was very dense fog all the way there, so that slowed us down a bit. His classes include: Chemistry 1, Calculus 2, Public Speaking, Architectural Engineering Orientation and History of Buildings -- 14 class hours. We were able to see a typical dorm room, though we don't know yet which building he's been assigned to. He'll find that out in July. He is also applying for a CSI (Campus Internship) program. If selected, he would work with the Women in Engineering program on a research project for 8-10 hours per week. This would pay him $2500/yr. It would be so helpful to him, not only the money to help pay for his college, but the experience which he could add to his resume! We are finishing up the paperwork for that right now, and must have it postmarked by next Monday. He just has to go out to Wichita State tomorrow and get his transcript for the 6 college hours he took while at Heights.

The twins continue their driver's ed classes. This is week 3 of 6. They drive every third day (next time is tomorrow) and that means they go from 8am-noon. Their regular time is 9:05am-10:45am. Next week they have a 3 hour night driving class. They will take over the Corsica after they get their 50 hours of drive time in. They will have to share it until one of them can afford to buy something. Kaitlin is furiously saving her money for an old truck. She has decided to try to find a different job. She is finding out that her work ethic is much stronger than her co-workers, and she tends to get to do most of the work. That gets old after a while! She will re-apply at Leeker's, but the manager is on vacation for 2 weeks, so it may take her a while to get on there.

Corby and I went out for dinner last Saturday to celebrate his birthday (early since it's this Friday) and then went and got his Father's Day/birthday present - a new grill. His old grill died last summer, and we hadn't replaced it yet. I didn't want to pick it out for him, since he tends to be a bit picky about his cooking stuff! We got a good deal on one at Lowe's, and they even had them 10% off! Of course, then he had to come home and put it together.

Mom has started some speech recognition therapy. They are hoping that it will help with her ability to understand how to tell time, etc. It certainly won't hurt!

Current book: The Morning After by Lisa Jackson. I've read several of her books, and this is a good one.

Current "hot" music: "Influences" by Shaw/Blades. Tommy Shaw, lead singer for Styx and Jack Blades, lead singer for Night Ranger used to belong to a band with Ted Nugent, called Damn Yankees. They recently released this CD, which is remakes of songs from the 60's and early 70's. It is really good!

VACATION

On vacation for a few days (return to work on Thursday)...here's where I wish I was... I plan on enjoying some peace and quiet...and possibly, if I get motivated, getting some cleaning and organizing done in the office area of the basement. We'll see if that motivation arrives (it's not here yet)... Good news for Park City residents...recycling came to town the first of January. We are charged $4.00 month (added onto our already high water bill); but it has lowered the price of our trash pickup. The company P.C. contracted with has a much lower price than the company we use. Our company matched the price, so our trash bills went down (considerably) AND we get to recycle. We can recycle almost all our plastics, newspapers, cardboard, aluminum cans, cereal boxes, glass, motor oil, etc. We've got two big bags to set out tomorrow. Just doin' our part for the environment. We are without hot water right now...our hot water heater needs a new thermo-couple? It's a fair

Fun times with Lenore

While Lenore and Daniel were here, she had a library book panel at the Johnson County Library in Overland Park. So, on Tuesday afternoon, November 27th, Lenore, her friend Rachelle and I took off for KC. We had a great time visiting on the way up and back, and I didn't get tired at all driving! We stopped for a quick bite to eat at Arby's and filled up with gas at QT before heading to the library. It was an interesting panel featuring Bethany Hagen, author of Landry Park, which comes out next year; Gennifer Albin, author of Crewel, which was released a few months ago; and Lenore, whose book will be released on January 15. Here's the panel: Me & Lenore: Lenore & Rachelle: Gennifer, Bethany and Lenore
