March Reading

I read 11 books this month:

1) This Side of Heaven - Karen Kingsbury
2) Married in Seattle - Debbie Macomber
3) One Day at a Time - Danielle Steel
4) 13 Little Blue Envelopes - Maureen Johnson
5) True Colors - Kristin Hannah
6) A Virgin River Christmas - Robyn Carr
7) The Matchmakers - Debbie Macomber
8) The Associate - John Grisham
9) The Second Opinion - Michael Palmer
10) Still Alice - Lisa Genova
11) Second Chance Pass - Robyn Carr

Although I love Kingsbury, Macomber, Steel, Hannah, Carr, Grisham and Palmer, I think the book that affected me the most last month was Still Alice by Lisa Genova. This is the story of 50-year-old Alice, who is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. My family has been affected by this disease - my niece's grandmother on her mother's side has Alzheimer's, while my mom is suffering from dementia and the beginning stages of what we believe to be Alzheimer's. Alice is a Harvard professor who realizes there is something wrong when she starts forgetting things, including where she lives when she is out for a run. She goes through the entire gamut of emotions, including contemplating suicide when she gets really bad. She makes a list of 5 questions, and if she ever gets to the point of not being able to answer those questions (which include what month it is and how many children she has) she has instructed herself to read a document on her computer titled "Butterfly" which gives her instructions to kill herself. I won't tell you how the book ends, but it is a book that should be read by anyone and everyone who either knows someone who suffers from this horrendous disease, or thinks they may be in the early stages of the disease. Very thought-provoking...Genova wrote this book because she lost her grandmother to Alzheimer's.

Michael Palmer remains one of my favorite authors too. The Second Opinion was worth reading.

Current music - DEFYING GRAVITY - the new Keith Urban CD. It's AWESOME!

VACATION

On vacation for a few days (return to work on Thursday)...here's where I wish I was... I plan on enjoying some peace and quiet...and possibly, if I get motivated, getting some cleaning and organizing done in the office area of the basement. We'll see if that motivation arrives (it's not here yet)... Good news for Park City residents...recycling came to town the first of January. We are charged $4.00 month (added onto our already high water bill); but it has lowered the price of our trash pickup. The company P.C. contracted with has a much lower price than the company we use. Our company matched the price, so our trash bills went down (considerably) AND we get to recycle. We can recycle almost all our plastics, newspapers, cardboard, aluminum cans, cereal boxes, glass, motor oil, etc. We've got two big bags to set out tomorrow. Just doin' our part for the environment. We are without hot water right now...our hot water heater needs a new thermo-couple? It's a fair

Fun times with Lenore

While Lenore and Daniel were here, she had a library book panel at the Johnson County Library in Overland Park. So, on Tuesday afternoon, November 27th, Lenore, her friend Rachelle and I took off for KC. We had a great time visiting on the way up and back, and I didn't get tired at all driving! We stopped for a quick bite to eat at Arby's and filled up with gas at QT before heading to the library. It was an interesting panel featuring Bethany Hagen, author of Landry Park, which comes out next year; Gennifer Albin, author of Crewel, which was released a few months ago; and Lenore, whose book will be released on January 15. Here's the panel: Me & Lenore: Lenore & Rachelle: Gennifer, Bethany and Lenore
